In the rural municipality of Claveria, approximately 70 kilometres from the city of Cagayan de Oro, the Philippine Island Kids Int’l. Foundation, Inc. (PIKIFI) runs another shelter home for vulnerable boys. The home, funded by the Austrian association “Just One Touch” and established by its founder and PIKIFI board member Mathias Dür, currently provides a new home for 15 children and young people. Most of them come from the streets and slums of the city of Cagayan de Oro. There, they lived in precarious conditions and bitter poverty, often left defenceless against violence and abuse. Some of them were also addicted to glue, the cheapest and at the same time most harmful addictive substance among street children. Far away from the city, the children and young people at the Shelter Home receive professional, full-time care and support in an environment that is as family-like as possible. They attend the local state primary and secondary schools and later have the opportunity to pursue further education and training, right up to completing a degree.
