Landfill Community Learning Center

Our Landfill Community Learning center is situated in the midst of the slum where the waste pickers of the former garbage dumpsite of Cagayan de Oro City are living. In June 2009, our first Learning Center opened its doors, offering basic education for school dropouts, coming from the poorest families of the City. Since 2013, also adults could visit the classes. Furthermore, over 40 students attend the alternative learning system, also called ALS. ALS-classes are made for youth from 12 years on, who could not be integrated in regular classes because of late school enrolment or after they missed school for several years. In 2019, a special ALS-class for teen mothers was added to the program. Besides that, the adults living in Landfill have the possibility to participate in livelihood programs as well as alphabetization and education courses. An example of our livelihood project is sewing and tailoring. The former waste collectors become productive. The Landfill Community Center serves as a meeting point in the community. A community social worker works 6 days a week to attend to their concerns and needs. The Center has become a symbol of hope and direction. It serves as a refuge for the desperate and unprivileged members of this city. The Center has flourished from its humble beginnings mainly because of the commitment and determination of the parties involved. It has served as a place of refuge for many.
